MoveSmart.org - A Web App That Helps Build Strong Neighborhoods!

Submitted by jim on Wed, 2009-11-25 13:00

Movesmart.org logoMoveSmart.org recently launched their Neighborhood Finder, an online web application for people seeking to move to a new neighborhood in Chicago - and coming soon, other cities around the US!

MoveSmart's Neighborhood Finder works by analyzing a user's neighborhood preferences: population density, proximity to libraries or farmers' markets, locations near certain types of schools, and several others.  Users can view interactive maps of various neighborhoods with a wide variety of features and community resources highlighted.  In addition, the site offers user-friendly guides to a number of housing topics, including discriminatory housing, rent and leases, sexual harrassment, and more.

MoveSmart isn't just fighting discrimination in housing issues - it's actively promoting "vibrant and diverse neighborhoods."  The organization is a wonderful example of harnessing technology for social good.  From the MoveSmart.org "About Us" page:

MoveSmart.org leverages the power of this information by combining these and other data sources into a single mapping engine built into a full-featured site that includes guides, tools, calculators, forums, and social networks, all designed to foster racial and economic integration.
