GIS 101 for NPOs - Workshop Description

This two-hour seminar session consists of:

  • a basic primer in GIS - geographic information systems - and an exploration of the use of GIS and online mapping applications in a variety of nonprofit contexts, including program/service delivery, research, fundraising/development, and advocacy/activism;
  • review of case studies and examples of nonprofit organizations using maps and GIS effectively to tell their stories and the stories of their communities, helping transform data into real visions of people and places;
  • discussion of technical, financial, and human factors in implementing an online mapping or GIS project, including data acquisition, online privacy and ethical concerns, budgeting and fundraising, and tool/vendor selection.

In addition, attendees will receive information about the availability of free software, tools, and local/regional data in their community.
